A First World War memorial unveiled in 1921.
A First World War memorial unveiled in 1921.
MATERIALS: the memorial is constructed of roughly-hewn granite with leaded lettering.
DESCRIPTION: the memorial stands approximately 20m south-east of the Church of St Nicholas. It is approximately 2.1m high and consists of a cross that tapers towards the centre set on a haunched rectangular plinth. Within a recessed panel on the plinth is the Inscription: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO DIED/ FOR THEIR KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914–1918/ KILLED IN ACTION/ (5 NAMES)/ DIED IN THE SERVICE/ (2 NAMES)/ KILLED IN WAR WORK/ (1 NAME)/ FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH/ JESU MERCY.
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. This was the result of both the huge impact on communities of the loss of three quarters of a million British lives, and also the official policy of not repatriating the dead: therefore the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss.
The memorial at Thelnetham was raised within the churchyard of the Church of St Nicholas (Grade I) as a permanent tribute to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War. The memorial was unveiled on Sunday 24 April 1921 by Prince Frederick Duleep Singh.
Thelnetham War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
Architectural interest:
* as a well-executed stone cross.
Historic interest:
* as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20.
Group value:
* with the Church of St Nicholas (Grade I).
