Summary

First World War memorial, 1919, with later additions for the Second World War.

Description

The war memorial stands in the graveyard to the north of the Vicarage. It comprises a tall pink granite obelisk, square on plan, rising from the sloping cornice of the plinth. That stands on a three-stage base. The monument is surrounded by a circular kerb studded with low pyramidal pillars. Four narrow paths with scalloped edging lead from the kerb to the memorial.

The principal dedicatory inscription on the front face of the plinth reads ERECTED/ BY THE PARISHIONERS AND FRIENDS/ OF CASTLESIDE/ IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (10 NAMES). Below this on the upper stage of the base is “THEY ANSWERED THE CALL OF DUTY/ THEY SLEEP AMONG THE BRAVE/ THEY SACRIFICED THEIR PRECIOUS LIVES/ OUR BRITISH HOMES TO SAVE”. The middle stage carries the scriptural quotation from John c15 v13 “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS.”

The remaining First World War names are listed on the right-hand face of the plinth. To the left the Second World War dedication reads IN MEMORY OF THE MEN/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/ SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945/ (11 NAMES) with the remaining names listed to the rear.

This List entry has been amended to add sources for War Memorials Online and the War Memorials Register. These sources were not used in the compilation of this List entry but are added here as a guide for further reading, 7 February 2017.

History

Castleside War Memorial was unveiled at a well-attended ceremony on 20 September 1919 by Lord Thurlow, Rector of Bishop Auckland. It commemorates 18 local servicemen who died during the First World War. Following the Second World War a dedication was added to commemorate the 20 men who died in that conflict.

Reasons for Listing

Castleside War Memorial, which stands in the graveyard off Church Street, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on this local community, and the sacrifice it has made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: an elegant obelisk in the Classical style.
