Canal lock. c1800, restored 1971. John Rennie, Engineer. Brick-lined basin with two-course heavy sandstone flush rounded coping, splayed at upper end, splayed and ramped down to east at lower end, to west wall continues down with steep coped ramp, then returns at right angles to canal wall. Bridge crosses lower end (qv). Two pairs of timber gates, and cast iron winch gear at upper end. The Kennet and Avon Canal was opened throughout in 1810.
