Footbridge over canal lock. c1815. John Rennie, engineer. Manufactured by Stothert of Bath. Cast-iron. narrow slightly cambered arch carrying macadamised path on three cast iron ribs with pierced spandrels, and makers panel: `STOTHERT, BATH'. To each side are close set spiked railings with top rail, double mid-rail with diamond enrichment, and dog-bars. Railing returns at each end to lower end of lock, following ramped wall on east side.
HISTORY: This was one of the bridges placed across the new canal to link the recent developments along the slopes of Bathwick Hill with the city. The Kennet and Avon Canal, authorised in 1794, opened fully in 1810.
