GV II

Two interconnected houses, part of irregular terrace on hillside to north of London Road. No.38 to right mid C19 with late C19 alterations. No.40 late C18 with late C19 alterations.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, slate and concrete tile roofs with moulded stacks.
PLAN: Each has double depth plan, No.40 set back.
EXTERIOR: No.38 has mid C19 two storey block to road with hipped slate roof, parapet and three two/two-pane sash windows flanking six-panel door glazed to top. South elevation of No.38, partially visible, plainly treated with tripartite window over arcaded ground floor, cornice, parapet. No.40 has two storeys. Concrete tile roof, north street facade has parapet, coved cornice, altered window treatment with plain sashes in line on first floor. Six-panel door with top two glazed. South elevation with two full height bays, segmental to left and semicircular to right, both these have plain plate glass sashes. Cornice, parapet, mansard roofs each with three large dormers, all late C19 alteration.
INTERIORS: Not inspected.
HISTORY: Despite considerable alteration, the pair remains part of a distinctive development of edge-of-town villas, built to take advantage of the southward prospect over Bath, with their main elevational treatment on the south (garden) side.
