Description

LYNCOMBE HILL
(East side)

North and East
boundary walls to
Lyncombe Hill
Burial Ground

GV II

Walls. Late C18.
MATERIALS: Coursed squared limestone.
EXTERIOR: High retaining walls up to 3.5m. in height, triangular copings. Striking landscape feature on Claverton Street.
HISTORY: These walls formerly secured the Unitarian Burial Ground. According to Peach, `this exquisitely beautiful spot, in the lovely glen of Lyncombe, was presented to his brethren by the late Mr Howse, as a burial ground, in the year 1819. Here is a convenient chapel, around which many interments have taken place'. The ground has been built over since.
