Chimney to west of De Montalt Works
05/08/75
GV II
Boiler stack. Mid C19.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar.
PLAN: Lofty tapered shaft, approx 2.8m wide at base, with ovolo bed-mould capping below short (approx 1.2m) vertical shaft to further ovolo mould cornice.
EXTERIOR: Small arched opening to base on east side, facing towards main works (qv), otherwise shaft completely plain, with moulding near the top. It was connected to boiler by stone culvert following slope up from works approx 80m to east, and was built at distance from works, when converted from water power to steam. Condition poor at time of inspection (2002).
HISTORY: The precise circumstances of the building of this tall chimney are not known. Steam power was involved in the manufacture of paper, in reducing rags to fibre, and steam power was mentioned in an 1841 sales particulars drawn up for the site. A view of the works from the 1850s depicted the chimney.
