House, now flats. c1771-1773. Architect: John Wood the Younger.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, ashlar and rubble to rear. Double pile parapeted mansard roof, artificial slate to front and rear, with two ashlar stacks on coped party wall to left, to rear with early clay pots, and smaller ashlar stack rising from rear wall.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, three-window front. First floor has three plate glass horned sashes in plain reveals with architraves removed with splayed jambs, floating friezes and cornices over, lowered moulded stone sills on cut down console brackets. Second floor has three plate glass horned sashes in ovolo moulded architraves with stone sills. Ground floor has, to left, two plate glass horned sashes in plain reveals with splayed jambs with stone sills; to right, a six-panel door with flush beaded and fielded panels in reeded timber surround with panelled side lights and decorative fanlight over in chamfered round headed reveal, Pennant paved crossover with cast iron footscraper flush with pavement. Basement has eight/eight-sash in splayed reveal with timber lintel and stone sill, C20 six-panel door in plain reveal to centre, six/six-sash in splayed reveal with stone sill under crossover, C20 area steps. Two single dormers with plate glass horned sashes. Band course over ground floor; modillion eaves cornice and coped parapet. Lead hopperhead and downpipe attached to left shared with No.7 Russell Street (qv). Rear elevation partially visible has two/two-sashes to second floor and in dormer, C19 full height parapeted extension with two/two-sash to second floor.
INTERIOR: Ground floor inspected only. Staircase: Dog leg timber staircase with shaped cheek-pieces, three turned balusters to tread, mahogany grip handrail. Hall arch has plasterwork decoration of arabesques; palmette frieze to moulded plaster cornice to outer hall. Ground floor flat. Ground floor front has C20 fireplace, dado panelling, enriched plaster modillion eaves cornice. Chimney breast alcoves with "floating" enriched plasterwork mouldings defining semicircular head. Fat ovolo architraves to front range of building. Ceilings lowered to subdivided rear room, some ovolo moulded six-panel doors.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Railings to front area.
HISTORY: Russell Street developed by John Wood in conjunction with Assembly Rooms and east end of Rivers Street on part of Holdstock's Garden or Russell's Close bought by Wood and Andrew Sproule, his trustee from Thomas and Daniel Omer 30th December 1768.
