House, now flats. c1771-1773. Architect: John Wood the Younger.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar to front, rubble to plinth to basement, rear elevation not visible, double pile roof, parapeted Welsh Slate mansard to front, roof not visible to rear with two ashlar stacks with early clay pots on coped party wall to right.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys, attic and basement, three-window front. First floor has three plate glass horned sashes in splayed ovolo moulded architraves with friezes and cornices and lowered moulded stone sills with wrought iron balconettes on cut down console brackets, C19 timber blind box to each window. Second floor has three six/six-sashes in ovolo moulded architraves with stone sills, to centre and right with window guards, very small single pane window to far left. Ground floor has two plate glass horned sashes in plain reveals with stone sills to right; to left a six-panel door with flush reeded, fielded and glazed panels with single Pennant step in cyma moulded architrave with console brackets supporting projecting moulded cornice forming hood over, with part of wrought iron lamp bracket remaining to frieze of doorcase, two steps to Pennant paved crossover with wrought iron footscraper. Basement has two six/six-sashes in plain reveals with stone sills, unmoulded six-panel door under crossover, C20 area steps. Double dormer with six/six-sashes. Band course over ground floor, modillion eaves cornice and coped parapet. Rear elevation not visible.
INTERIOR: Not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached wrought iron railings and gate with shaped heads on painted limestone bases.
HISTORY: Russell Street developed by John Wood in conjunction with Assembly Rooms and east end of Rivers Street on part of Holdstock's Garden or Russell's Close bought by Wood and Andrew Sproule, his trustee, from Thomas and Daniel Omer 30th December 1768.
