War memorial, post 1918.
MATERIALS: constructed of light grey granite.
DESCRIPTION: The memorial has a chamfered cross upon a tapering chamfered shaft, rising from an hexagonal collar on a square plinth set upon a stepped hexagonal base. The names of the fallen are recorded, in black relief lettering, on the base and step to the front (west side of the memorial). The memorial is set in an enclosure marked out by small granite bollards.
A granite plaque on the west face of the plinth bears the text:
`In grateful memory/ of those who gave their lives/ in the Great War 1914 -1919 / and especially of/ ( 9 names) /1935-49/ (4 names).
HISTORY: The war memorial was erected after 1918 and added to after 1945.
SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE: War memorials are valued because of their continued relevance to society, acting both as a focal point for formal memorial services and providing a poignant reminder of the human cost of recent conflict. This example in Powderham is associated with other listed memorials and buildings and its composition although simple, is elegant and well handled.
