War Memorial in St. Mary's Churchyard
GV II
War memorial. 1919. Portland stone. Memorial is in the form of a churchyard cross and is approx. 3 metres high. Octagonal stepped base is surmounted by cruciform pedestal from which rises a moulded octagonal shaft base carved on one face with an infantryman in low relief. From this rises the octagonal shaft of the cross, a finely carved figure of Christ hanging from its arms which are also octagonal. The figure is protected by an unusual gablet canopy which has curving sides. Various inscription panels commemorate the Fallen in both World Wars.
This finely detailed memorial forms a group with the adjacent Church of St. Mary (q.v.)
