2 houses, now offices. c1820 with later alterations.
Pinkish-brown brick in Flemish bond with flat arches of red
gauged brick and stone sills, stucco to ground floor, hipped
slate roof and 4 brick stacks with oversailing courses, 3 with
pots.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, 3 first-floor windows. Ground floor has
plinth and rustication surmounted by continuous cornice with
triglyphs and metopes, cornice. First floor has central 6/6 sash
and outer 8/8 sashes; second floor has central 3/6 sash and outer
4/8 sashes; all in plain reveals and with sills and with flat
arches. Ground floor has 8/8 sash to right, reveals and sill.
Pair of off-centre left entrances in shared pedimented tristyle
Roman Doric porch with 3/4 engaged columns; 6-panel doors have
upper panels raised and fielded and lower panels flush beaded, in
similar reveals; overlights have margin lights, some etched
glass. Left facade (to Farrier Street): 3 storeys, 4 first-floor
windows. Ground floor has plinth, rustication and continuous
cornice with triglyphs and metopes, cornice. First floor has 8/8
sashes; second floor has 4/8 sashes; ground floor has 6/6, 8/8
and tripartite 6/6 between 2/2 sashes; all in plain reveals and
with sills, those to first and second floors have flat arches.
Off-centre left entrance in pedimented Roman Doric porch with 3/4
engaged columns; a 4-panel door, the upper panels raised and
fielded, lower panel with moulded surround in panelled reveals;
overlight with margin-lights. Right return: ground floor has
8-pane French window with margin-lights, 4/8 and 8/8 sashes.
First floor has two 8/8 sashes and 6/6 sash. Second floor has
blind opening, 4/8 sash, 8/8 and 6/6 sashes; all in plain reveals
and with flat brick arches. 2 round-arched staircase windows have
6/6 sashes with radial glazing bars to head and margin lights.
INTERIOR: retains original plasterwork to some rooms, that to
ground floor at left has ceiling frieze with acanthus scroll;
-plan hallway to No.6 has cornice with shaped modillions and
fleurons and archway. Openwell staircase at right has rod-on-vase
balusters. Otherwise not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: buildings at the corner of Shaw Street and
Foregate Street were redeveloped c1840 and it is possible that
this belongs to the same phase of development.
A similar design to Nos 3 and 4 Shaw Street (qv). Occupies a
prominent corner site at junction of Shaw Street and Farrier
Street.
