Farmhouse. C16 with early C19 alterations and additions.
Timber-framed, painted brick and rendered infill, brick
replacement walling and refacing, rendered and painted brick
additions, plain clay tiled roofs, 2 brick ridge stacks and, at
rear, external sandstone chimney with brick stack. L-shaped plan;
main part of 4 framed bays on west/east axis with
through-passage, now blocked to south, with a single bay wing at
the south-west end, extended south during the early C19 and an
additional wing built alongside its extended west side elevation.
Single-storey and attic with dormers; cellar. FRAMING: irregular,
mainly 3 square panels from sill to wall-plate, long swept and
short straight braces in lower corners, collar and tie-beam
trusses with queen struts and V-struts in apex in gable ends.
MAIN NORTH ELEVATION: dairy outshut with 3-light casement to left
2 bays, adjoining bay has large 5-light casement and end bay has
canted bay window with moulded cornice and casements, to right a
small side-hung casement; above the large casement is a gabled
dormer with casement and left of it is a panelled door opening
onto the former through-passage. Main entrance now at west gable
end and has a part-glazed panelled door, pilastered surround and
open pediment; above it is an attic light and to the right a
pointed arched, traceried window with leaded lights.
INTERIOR: roof has trenched, single purlins and intermediate
tie-beam trusses with queen struts. C17 cross-beamed ceiling in
former 'hall' west of through-passage with stop-chamfered main
beams; C17 dog-leg staircase with turned balusters and moulded
handrail in upper west end part of main range. Spring rises in
cellar.
