Description

PAINSWICK

1305/0/10010 CHELTENHAM ROAD
20-JUL-01 Mill Cottage

II

Mill Cottage, Olivers, Cheltenham Road, Painswick.

Cottage. Early 18th century, with later additions. Limestone walls, red brick chimney stacks, slate roof. Single room plan with kitchen outshut to north (later raised by a floor) and later addition (perhaps early 20th century) to south. Plat bands to first and second floor levels, running across kitchen extension at the lower level, with keystones over front door and ground floor window. Wooden mullion window to kitchen; windows with wooden frames and leaded lights to ground floor rear and second floor side, otherwise later. Plain rear elevation of tooled ashlar, relieved only by two small window openings. Interior retains many early features. These include numerous plank and panel doors; cupboards; the stair from first to second floors; stone angle fireplace on first floor; open truss roof structure. This cottage presumably served the now-derelict mill close by, and is of special interest for the architectural treatment of its front elevation and the extent of survival of internal fittings.
