Lincoln Constitutional Club
GV II
Constitutional club. 1895. Designed by William Watkins and
built by Otter & Co of Lincoln. Brick with terracotta
dressings and slate roofs. Flemish Renaissance Revival style.
EXTERIOR: sill bands, enriched first and second floor
cornices, eaves band, shaped coped gables. 2 storeys plus
basement and attics. First floor windows are mainly glazing
bar sashes. Ground floor and attic windows are mainly
casements with mullions and transoms.
Front to Silver Street, 6 bays, has a projecting entrance bay
to left, with a door and a flanking window, both with round
heads. Above, an angled oriel window, 2 storeys, with 2
storeys, and above it, a 4-light window.
Bowed north-east corner, to left, has 3 windows, cornice and
balustrade. Above, a hexagonal stair tower with moulded
cornice and 3 sashes. Ramped coped parapet with 3 oval
windows. Above again, a set back pargeted drum topped with a
leaded dome.
To the right, a 2 storey range, 4 bays, with coped parapet and
gables, and a frieze of national crests between the windows. 4
ground floor windows, and 3 above. To the right, a round
headed doorway with a window above it.
East front, to Broadgate, 3 bays, has a basement with a square
headed door and 4 iron framed windows. Above, a central
3-light mullioned window flanked by single oval lights.
Beyond, 2 round headed windows. Above, a canted central bay
with pediment, flanked by single gabled wings, each with 2
sashes. Above again, each wing has a 5-light window.
INTERIOR has an elaborate cantilever stone spiral stair with
landings, cast-iron balustrade and ramped and scrolled
handrail. First floor ballroom has a ribbed semicircular
vault. Ground floor billiard room has original fitted benches
and tables.
