Wesleyan Day School
II
Wesleyan Day School, now disused and partly demolished. Dated
1859, by Bellamy & Hardy. Late C19 rear addition. Red brick,
with yellow brick and stone dressings, slate and concrete tile
roofs. Italianate style.
EXTERIOR: plinth, hoodmoulds and impost band, diaper-work
frieze, dentilled eaves and pedimented gables.
Main block, 2 storeys, with attached tower, former schoolroom
to north, front wall only of south range. 9 bays. L-plan.
Main block has a slightly projecting pedimented wing to left,
with a canted bay window and round headed windows. Above, a
triple round headed window. To right, set back square tower, 3
stages, with first floor band, ribbed clasping pilasters,
bracketed eaves cornice and pedimented gables. First stage has
a segment headed carriage opening with a tablet above it,
inscribed "Entrance to boys' school". Above, a round headed
window. Bell stage has a single pointed arched opening on each
side, and a datestone to east. Square clock turret above, with
square ogee lead roof and weather vane.
Schoolroom has 5 round headed 2-light casements, that to right
in a slightly projecting pedimented bay. South range has to
right a pedimented bay with a blocked carriage opening. Above
it, a tablet inscribed "Infants' and Girls' schools". To left,
a small round headed window and a larger one to its left.
Single storey rear addition, 7 bays, has glazing bar windows.
