Villa, now club. c1824-28 with later additions and alterations
including range c1890s to rear. Probably by JB Paporth. Ashlar
over brick with concealed roof and end and off-centre right
stucco ridge stacks.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 3 first-floor windows. Originally double
depth plan with central hallway. Centre recessed slightly.
Outer bays have first-floor bands. First floor has 6/6 sashes.
Ground floor has outer tripartite windows with replacement 1/1
sashes with segmental-arched recess above. All in plain
reveals and with sills; those to first floor have Venetian
blinds and blind boxes. Central entrance, C20 French windows.
Main entrance now in range at right.
INTERIOR: remodelled, but has retained much original joinery,
including panelled doors, and enriched plaster cornicing.
HISTORICAL NOTE: JB Papworth came to Cheltenham in 1824 at the
invitation of Dr Schoolbred, for whom he designed Rosehill
(since greatly altered). Farnley Lodge is significant in that
it shows close similarities with the Rosehill designs. Shown
and named on Merrett's Map of 1834. Verey notes 'a pleasant
detached tetrastyle Ionic portico', now missing.
Undergoing renovations and restorations at time of Review.
