boundary railings

County Grammar School, now part of Bolton Metropolitan
College. 1897. Brick with terracotta dressings and slate roof.
EXTERIOR AND PLAN: 3 storey, plan comprises 3 parallel ranges
with 9-window range facing street with advanced outer bays and
doorway in porch to left of centre. Segmental pediment to
porch with arched doorway with decorated spandrels and round
arched overlights above. Lettering in mosaic above the
windows.
Mullioned and transomed windows to ground floor, and similar
windows above, with a tripartite window to left of central
bay, and an oriel window to the right of the entrance. Pierced
parapet between the gables. Central pedimented gable with
Palladian window in second storey, and cupola on roof to rear
of gable. Outer gables have paired 3-light mullioned windows
and palladian window in upper storey.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: cast-iron railings and gates with banded
gate piers to each side of the building, denoting the original
boys and girls entrances in return elevations.
