Public house and attached railings. c1820-30, shown on
Merrett's Map of 1834, with late C19 range to left. Stucco
over brick with concealed roof; range to left in red brick
with gault brick dressings; iron railings.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, on basement to right return, 4 + 1
first-floor windows, with 2-storey, 1 + 1 first-floor window
range to left. Main range has rounded corner to right with
blind openings to first and second floors; casement to ground
floor. First- and second-floor bands. Ground-floor window
sills have corbel brackets. Ground floor has 2/2
horizontal-pane sash and 1/1 sashes with margin lights. First
floor has 6/6 sashes, blind to third opening. Second floor has
3/6 sashes, blind to fourth opening. Off-centre right entrance
in projecting porch with part-glazed sides and entablature,
part-glazed door. Right return has 3-first-floor windows with
6/6 and 3/6 sashes where original. Further central entrance,
steps to 6-panel door with overlight with circle and lozenge
type glazing bars. Range at left articulated by pilaster
strips. 1/1 sashes, entrance to angle, part-glazed doors with
overlight.
INTERIOR: remodelled in bar area, otherwise not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: this large pub pre-dates the artisan district
of St Luke's which it serves. An externally complete and rare
surviving example of a typical Georgian town pub, typically
with 2 doorways on a corner site opening directly onto the
street.
