Villa, later Youth Hostel, now house. 1902, altered late C20
by R Lofthouse & Sons, Middlesbrough, for Mr Walker. Brick
with bright red terracotta dressings; roof of plain tiles with
brick chimneys.
STYLE: Domestic Revival.
PLAN: irregular H-plan, with extensions.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics, 6-window range, arranged
2:2:2. 2-storey, 4-window range wing set back at left and
single storey, right wing set further back.
Recessed centre has central partly glazed door and 4-pane
overlight in keyed brick surround with elliptical head.
Flanking ground-floor windows have 4 over 6 panes in similar
surrounds that to right projects; 8 pane sashes on first-floor
flank terracotta cartouche with deeply moulded scrolls.
Sill strings, ground-floor cornice resting on window keystones
and eaves band on first-floor keystones all continue round
slight projections of outer bays which have shaped gables with
moulded coping over 3 left and at right two widely-spaced
ground-floor windows; paired first-floor windows.
In left gable peak a renewed 3-light window on apron and
moulded sill has brick jambs and scrolled pediment; in right
gable a moulded sill to 2-light casement with glazing bars and
keyed brick surround.
Left wing has blind ground floor at left, inserted door at
right under small window; 10-pane window at right; four 8-pane
sashes windows set high in wall; stair window in 3-storey
right bay.
Right return of centre block has shallow apsed full-height
projecting bay with continuous strings and cornice.
Roof has tall chimney stacks set transverse ridge, on rear
eaves and on rear one storey wing, with plinths and cornices
and no pots.
Entrance front to drive has wide step up to renewed door at
left of main block under shaped gable; irregular fenestration;
small panes in late C17 style to 3 first-floor windows to left
of door.
