SALTBURN, MARSKE AND NEW MARSKE

Mortuary

GV II

Mortuary. Named and dated 1881 in gable peak. Render with
painted ashlar dressings; Welsh slate roof. Single cell plan.
Gothic Revival style.
EXTERIOR: gabled west front has renewed door and shaped
overlight in 2-centred pointed arch. Single small light in
south elevation, other elevations blank. Angle buttresses have
2 offsets with sloped coping. Roof has ashlar coping at east,
with moulded kneelers, gablets at mid-slope and truncated
block finial.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORY: built to house bodies which were frequently washed up
on the beach. Once part of a group comprising mortuary,
lifeboat house and rocket brigade house. The only building to
survive road improvements.
