Terrace of 5 houses, now shops and bank. c1820-5; shown on
1825 map. Numbered right to left, described left to right.
Ashlar over brick, part to right is stuccoed and painted (Nos
1-5), slate roof with brick and stucco party-wall stacks;
wrought-iron balconies.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, with 2 gabled attic storeys, 15
first-floor windows arranged 3:2:5:2:3. Ashlar detailing
includes first- and second-floor bands to left-hand gabled
range; the 4th and 5th window range break forward and has
attic to gable; the 11th and 12th also gabled and with Doric
pilasters through 1st and 2nd floors. To left of 6th window
are quoins. Windows 6-12 and return to first floor have tooled
architrave, those to ground floor and gabled range have
pulvinated frieze and cornice. Continuous crowning frieze and
cornice, blocking course and copings. Replacement windows: 1/1
and 2/2 sashes, some mock 6/6 sashes; thermal window to left
attic (otherwise no opening to right); all in plain reveals
and with sills. Ground floor (from left) No.9 has central
entrance, double glazed doors in 2-columnar Doric porch with
architrave, frieze and cornice; outer Doric columns surmounted
by wide frieze and cornice with C20 glazing between. No.7 has
round-arched opening to right with 5-panel door, lattice
frieze and fanlight. Midland Bank, ground floor has bank front
with Doric pilasters and c20 tooled architraves to end and
windows; entrance at left angle in solid Doric porch a C20
door with overlight with lattice glazing bars. Right return: 2
first-floor window range, gabled. Similar fenestration, that
to first floor has pulvinated frieze and cornice. Rear: some
6/6 sashes remain.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: first floor has window guards to No.7
with ornate scroll motif; balcony above porch to No.5 has rod
and lattice motif.
Occupies an important corner site and forms a visual stop to
Montpellier Street.
