Shops, now bank. 1843 with later alterations including mansard
roof. Architect: possibly Samuel W Daukes and J Hamilton.
Ashlar over brick with slate mansard roof.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attic, 6 first-floor windows. Ground
floor has plinth; banded rustication surmounted by cornice;
first-floor windows have tooled architraves, frieze and
cornice over first floor. Angles are chamfered. Left end and
off-centre right entrances, double 2-fielded-panel doors with
overlights in tooled architraves, that to left in recess;
further recess to 4th ground-floor opening and at right end.
Two 6/6 between 2/2 sashes, two 6/6 sashes. First floor has
6/9 sashes. Attic has 3/6 sashes. Returns are 2 windows deep,
those to ground floor are 6/6 sashes in shared architrave;
first floor has two 6/9 sashes to left and blind opening and
2/2 sash to left. 'MONTPELLIER EXCHANGE' carved to right
return. Rounded angles to rear; rear retains 6/6 sashes.
INTERIOR: reputed to have narrow open-well staircase with
stick balusters.
HISTORICAL NOTE: built as a block of 3 shops. This may have
been designed by SW Daukes and J Hamilton who, c1844, were
designing shops on Rotunda Terrace, Montpellier Street (qv).
Occupies an important site at the junction of Montpellier
Walk, Montpellier Terrace and Lansdown Road.
