Merchant's house, one of an original pair. C17, remodelled to
front probably mid C19.
MATERIALS: stuccoed front, timber frame with close-set studs
at rear and to right-hand side of wing (the 2nd floor
originally slate-hung); rendered brick to rear wall of wing;
steep dry slate roofs, rear gable of front range shared with
No.35 (qv); 1 hipped roof dormer to wing; large stone lateral
stacks: one to rear left and another to left-hand side of
wing.
PLAN: overall L-shaped with 1 room at the front incorporating
a newel stair plus fairly deep rear wing at some time
truncated.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys over basement; 2-window 1st-floor range;
central window above; mid C19 12-pane hornless sashes. Ground
floor has exceptionally fine original ovolo and ogee moulded
oak doorway with stops incorporating strapwork over bulbous
bases and with an ogee-arched head on the right and headrail
of former mullioned window over C20 horned triple sash on the
left (more original timber frame structure including a turned
post, 2 small windows and evidence for oriel window hidden
under plaster above). 2 squat basement windows, the one on the
left originally a loading hatch. Rear has C20 2-light casement
under gable, C20 replica 3-light mullioned window to 1st floor
and 4-panel door in original moulded oak frame to ground
floor. Front of rear wing has original 8-light mullioned
window to 1st-floor left and 4 surviving lights of a similar
window on the right. Ground floor has a central 8-light
mullioned window, which, except for the head beam, is a C20
replica of the original; all the mullioned windows have ovolo
mouldings. There is an original moulded doorway to
ground-floor left of the wing and evidence for another at far
right. Rear gable end of the wing has a C19 hornless sash to
each floor: a 16-pane sash to ground-floor left, a 12-pane
sash to 1st-floor centre and a 4-pane sash above.
INTERIOR: retains much of its original structure including
wooden newel stair and roof trusses with threaded purlins.
There is an early C18 eared chimeypiece with moulded and
pulvinated frieze and dentils to 2nd-floor front room and
there are 2 simple wooden chimneypieces, one with a c1900 iron
grate; narrow C18 cupboard with H hinges to rear wing;
original joists to basement and stone staircase.
New Street contains a high proportion of fine C17 and C18
houses.
