GV II
Pair of large villas in planned group. Mid C19 (shown on 1860
map). Incised stucco with stucco detail; dry slate mansard
roof over front and rear eaves entablature of fairly
widely-spaced brackets; each house with 4 mansard windows with
pediments (similar windows at rear) another smaller window off
centre, all 4-pane horned sashes; 2-stage stuccoed axial and
end stacks with stepped cornices. Double-depth plan, near
mirror-image pair.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys plus attic over basement; each house has a
4-window-range unaltered front including a tripartite stair
window (2nd from end window) with broken and open segmental
pediment on consoles to the central light. End windows are
over corners of porches, the other bays are regular with 2
windows to each floor; all horned sashes within moulded
architraves. Stucco detail includes: rusticated quoins,
moulded plinth and mid-floor strings; porch with channelled
rustication, moulded sill string and moulded parapet
entablature. The large flat-roofed porches are 3 bays with
sashes to inner bays and sash to each end return; Pedimented
doorways to outer bays with carved tympana and engaged Tuscan
columns on plinths; inner doorways with moulded and keyed
architraves; leaded glazed overlights and panelled doors with
fielded and bolection-moulded panels.
Rear has similar stucco detail and mostly horned sashes and
there is a wrought-iron iron eaves balustrade. Each house has
a full-height canted bay to its end bay surmounted by a
smaller-plan attic window with poygonal roof. No 8 has 3
regular inner bays; No 7 has 1 similar bay and a bowed
projection with tripartite windows, but with sash replaced
with plain glass to 1st-floor centre light over ground-floor
light altered to create doorway with overlight and pair of
glazed doors.
INTERIOR not inspected but likely to be as unaltered as the
exterior and to contain features which reflect its strong
external architectural detail.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: forecourt walls surmounted by
wrought-iron railings with arrow-head finials.
A virtually unaltered pair of villas in a good planned group.
