Description

SOUTHWARK

TQ3475SE FOREST HILL ROAD
636-1/61/343 (South West side)
31/05/96 Gates, piers and railings to
Camberwell Old Cemetery

II

Gates, piers and railings to Camberwell Old Cemetery. 1856.
Ragstone with smooth stone dressings; cast and wrought-iron.
Gothic Revival style to match the Gate Lodge (qv).
Main entrance of 4 piers defining a single carriageway with
walkways to either side. The piers are square in section, with
set back buttresses to front and rear of each; the corners of
each pier chamfered with run out stops. Pier finishes in
facing gable; to return of gable blind, diminutive dormers
terminating in fleur-de-lis; at each corner of gable a carved
head.
Railings and gates have lower rails forming a frieze filled
with trefoiled tracery and quatrefoils; between uprights are
trefoiled tracery. Railings debouch to main road, forming a
shallow east-facing forecourt with outer piers, which are
simpler in design than those framing the gates, lacking
buttresses and heads.
Railings to north step down in section to terminate in a pier
of simple piers. Railings step up to south, terminating in
piers and railings which turn the corner to Wood Vale. All
railings braced by elegant curved rails to cemetery and set in
low stone plinth with simply chamfered coping. Railings have
been replaced in sections to match the original design.
