The Tunnel House, High Street Saltford.
The Tunnel House was built in 1744, probably for the Reverend Haviland John Hiley, Rector of Saltford between 1712 and 1754. In 1836 is was bought by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the famous engineer who built the Great Western Railway. Brunel built Saltford Tunnel directly under the house and it still carries the GWR mainline railway today, hence the name.
The house has since been the residence of a number of characters, used for offices and has been run as a guest house and small hotel. Jon and Helen Godfrey brought the house in September 2006 to convert it back to a family home and to restore it. It might take some time.
