House, now hotel. Reputedly dating from 1617; mid C19
restoration. Squared and coursed rubble with ashlar dressings
and copings, gabled pantile roof with end and mid-ridge stone
stacks.
STYLE: Tudor Gothic.
PLAN: cross-passage, double-depth plan with rear service wings
parallel to road with further range at right-angles to north.
EXTERIOR: 2-storeys and attic; 6-window range. Roadside facade
completely remodelled in the mid C19: three 4-light and one
3-light chamfered-mullion windows with dripstones to ground
floor; four 3-light mullion windows to first floor; 2 gabled
half-dormers with 2-light mullion window. Central gabled porch
with Tudor-arched outer entrance and inner, original
Tudor-arched doorway with plank door. Square turret rising
through roof to north-east corner with slit windows and spired
tile cap; stacks with paired shafts and row of three to north;
ridge tile cresting. Gable end of north range to road has
blocked mullioned window. Rear courtyard with 3 gabled wings
extending from main range to left; early C19 outshut with
gable to left at south-west corner. Gable ends have coped
parapets, that to north with tall ashlar stack. Mostly early
C19 plate-glass sash fenestration in flush ashlar surrounds,
though south-west outshut has plate-glass sashes with margin
glazing under cambered heads.
INTERIOR: cross-passage has small late C18 wooden elliptical
arches to ceiling, 2-light chamfered-mullion on south wall and
early C19 stained glass window to rear wall. Large inglenook
fireplace in ground-floor right-hand room.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: rear courtyard has retaining wall to
which are attached ancillary buildings; 2m high of squared,
random coursed limestone, minor brick infill and some cambered
ashlar coping stones and cement coping.
