Entrance gateway to Mesnes Park

GV II

Gate piers and gates forming entrance to park. Dated 1878.
Sandstone ashlar gate piers, cast-iron gates. Square piers,
the inner pair banded and with pulvinated friezes, moulded
cornices and large ball finials, the outer piers plain with
moulded cornices and blocking courses. Double gates to the
centre, with twisted dogbars and elaborate openwork with
Jacobean motifs, and in the centre of each a roundel with
Wigan shield and date 1878; pedestrian side gates in similar
style.
