Description

SEDBERGH

SD79NW CAUTLEY ROAD
162-1/3/282 (East side (off))
14/06/84 Bluecaster

II

Farmhouse with attached outbuildings; unoccupied at time of
survey and renovation in progress (1994). Probably early C18,
with later additions; altered. Roughly-coursed mixed rubble,
the house white-washed, graduated blue slate roof to main
range, stone slate to south wing, all with stone riggings.
L-plan formed by single-depth 2-unit house on north-south axis
facing east with short crosswing attached to south end and
outbuildings (in 2 builds) continued at north end.
EXTERIOR: 2 low storeys, 2 windows, with a straight
stone-slate drip-course over the ground floor (interrupted by
the porch); an asymmetrically gabled single-storey porch in
the centre with a square-headed doorway protected by a
drip-course; a narrow 1-light fire-window and a square 9-pane
fixed window to the left, a square window to the right with
fixed 4-pane glazing and a narrow 1-light window to the right
of this, and 2 square windows offset right at 1st floor (both
with replacement 9-pane top-hung casements). Short square
chimney on ridge at position of former south gable. Projected
gabled wing to left (perhaps formerly a stable with store
over) has doorway near right-hand corner and stone steps to
loft doorway, and left return has one course of
through-stones, 2 small windows at 1st floor. Outbuildings
continued at north end, 1 bay to same height (recently
rebuilt), and 2 bays to lower level with a pair of plain
doorways flanked by 1-light windows and a loading window above
that to the left. Rear: main range has doorway in centre, one
small window to the left, 2 square windows to the right and 2
windows at 1st floor, some or all apparently recent
insertions. INTERIOR not inspected, but believed to have been
made a single vessel at ground floor, with 2 chamfered beams
and a built-in cupboard.
