HOPTON WAFERS

SO6376 Tomb of Thomas Botfield and
582-1/10/130 railings 35 metres south of Church
of St Michael

GV II

Tomb and surrounding railings. Mid C19. Sandstone ashlar and
brick. Iron railings. Sarcophagus-style memorial set on large
ashlar-clad square brick tomb.
Sarcophagus: pyramid lid with ball-flower finial. Inclined
sides with simple incised border, all raised on lions' feet
standing clear of plain plinth. Plinth standing on ashlar
cambered-roofed tomb with corniced eaves. 3 raised plain
ashlar cladding panels on each side with 2 inset round
pilaster shafts between panels. Inscribed panel to south.
Railings: spear-head diagonally-set standards, top rails with
urn finials on round-section corner standards and at
mid-length. All set in plain stone plinth. Commemorates Thomas
Botfield d.1843 and Lucy his wife d.1856.
Thomas Botfield was of the family of Shropshire ironmasters
and a notable local benefactor, patron, and pioneer in the
application of iron; cf The Iron House, and Church of St
Michael, Hopton Wafers.
