SO66NW Myddle House Farmhouse including

GV II*

Farmhouse now house. Late C16, with C17 rear wing, C18 service
wings. Painted timber frame with painted rendered and painted
brick infill panels on brick plinth, brick. Plain-tile roofs.
C19 brick central ridge chimney on C16 diagonal shafts below
roof pitch. 3-bay front range with 3-bay rear cross wing and
additional service wings.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, cellar and attic. Front range (west) with
herringbone-pattern framing at first floor with raking studs
set between posts, former jettied bressumer now underbuilt
with rendered masonry at ground level. 2 large metal 3-light
casements with top-lights to each storey, and central
6-panelled door with upper panels glazed. Fixed to framing is
fire insurance mark for the Worcester Fire office.
Left (north) return gable of front range: square framing 3
panels high at first floor jettied over full-height
close-studded ground floor with double ovolo-chamfered
bressumer on 3 scalloped brackets, first-floor square framing
infilled with raking studs forming decorative pattern,
rendered former window opening, with double-ovolo-chamfered
sill. Gable-end truss with jettied cambered double
ovolo-chamfered tie beam, long raking struts lapped at head,
subsidiary raking struts linking to principals, double collars
framing boarded opening with ovolo-chamfered surround,
vertical struts under collar. 3 square panels adjacent to
former openings infilled with carved and curved bracing
forming decorative panels. Projecting tiled porch roof to
ground level with brick side wall to left covering
ovolo-chamfered doorway and plain boarded door reputed to have
come from Boraston Church after an C18 fire.
Right (south) return gable: herringbone pattern framing as for
the west front at first floor, jettied over close-studded
ground-floor framing. South gable-end truss framed the same as
north gable-end but with mostly brick infill panels.
Rear range side (north) wall: square framing 4 panels high to
first floor and 3 panels high to ground floor partly
underbuilt in brick to right. Long pair of tension braces at
first floor. Two C19 2-light casements at first floor and
3-light, 2-light and C20 windows at ground floor. Opposite
(south) side of rear range covered with C19 brick gabled and
lean-to extensions.
Rear wing gable end: C20 heavily restored square framing 2
panels high at first floor with jettied first-floor plain
chamfered bressumer on brackets on corner posts. Ground floor
underbuilt in brick with C20 casement. C19 segmental-arched
cellar opening.
C18 2-storey painted brick service wing extension to left
(south) and square brick oast house with slate roof to far
left.
INTERIOR: ground-floor south bay of front range has twin
bridging beams with ovolo-moulded chamfers and C17 low-relief
plastered ceiling with rose, leaf and star motifs and central
dome. North bay has deep plain chamfered bridging beams.
First-floor bays have ovolo-chamfered bridging beams with
moulded plaster cornices and the south bay has C17 low-relief
plastered ceiling with moulded leaf, rose and flower motifs.
North bay has cambered mantle beam with beaded soffit moulding
and ovolo-moulded brick support-wall jambs.
Double trenched-purlin roof with straight windbraces in mid
tier. 2 internal trusses of collar with twin vertical struts,
straight tie beam cut between struts. North internal truss
with infilled partition and with vestiges of C17 boarded door
and hinges.
Rear range: ground and first floors have deep chamfered
bridging beams with stepped-ovolo chamfer-stops. Single-purlin
roof with 2 internal trusses of collar and twin lower raking
struts interrupting tie beam, mostly using reused timbers.
