Inn. Late C18/early C19. Local stone roughly squared and
coursed, with ashlar dressings, hipped Welsh slate roof behind
parapets, with double Roman clay tiles between coped gables to
extension, ashlar and brick chimney stacks.
PLAN: double-depth plan with open-well stair to rear left. To
the left a later C19 gabled range and, across the rear,
forming an L, and partly covering the main range is a
steep-roofed gabled wing with end stacks, possibly of earlier
date.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, north roadside elevation of 3 bays, of
which bay 1 is a gable end of a later extension. Bay 1 has an
angled bay window with flat roof to ground floor, with 8+12+8
pane sash units, above this a deep painted signboard extending
well into gable, which is crowned with a chimney stack. Bays 2
and 3 have plinth, rusticated quoins, cornice and plain
parapet, lower bay 3 has a 16-pane sash window in plain
architrave, and upper bay 2 has a 12-pane sash window, with a
painted blind window to match in upper bay 3. Entrance in bay
2 has a pair of 3-panelled doors with large 2-pane rectangular
fanlight framed by Doric pilasters and pediment. West
elevation, to later C19 extension on left, 3 bays to match,
with 12- and 9-pane sash windows, and in centre bay a door
with rectangular fanlight and flat hood, lean-to extensions on
rear south side. East elevation of gable end and 3 bays, with
a lean-to against the gable, 12-pane sash window to lower bay
1, no window bay 3, 4-pane sash windows to first floor, all
set in brick surrounds, doorway with fanlight to bay 2, with
small 2-pane casement window to right.
INTERIOR: ground floor opened up to form restaurant area,
mainly late C20 fittings, but principal space has 4 niched
openings and moulded ceiling cornice. Fireplaces at each end
covered over. Stick balustrade to staircase. Upper floor
retains 6-panel moulded doors in fluted architraves with
patera; room 6 has mid C19 fluted fire surround over an arched
cast-iron grate, and room 8 has a smaller and more decorative
version.
Formerly The Railway Inn; the former rail track was taken out
mid C20, and is now used for by-pass road.
