House with shop. c1453, built as part of the "New Works" by
Bishop Bekynton, modified C19 and C20. Ashlar stonework,
colourwashed, Welsh slate roof behind parapet, brick chimney
stack.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, single wide bay. Ground floor has
slightly projecting shop front, possibly C19 but modified in
mid C20, across full width, full depth display windows,
central deep recessed glazed door and very deep fascia (which
may mask earlier work). Upper floors have a wide shallow
canted bay window to full height of parapet, incorporating
sash windows of 12+16+12 panes to first floor and 9+12+9 panes
to second floor. Original moulded string course above second
floor, pierced by bay, downpipe and hopper-head to left, and
stack to raised coped verge.
INTERIOR: ground floor has 4-compartment ceiling with moulded
beams, and 4-centred arch in rear wall. C19 stair rises to
chamfered stone 4-centred doorway, with C18 door alongside.
First floor front room has 2-compartment ceiling with moulded
beams. Stone newel stair, treads cased, to upper floor, which
is ceiled, but in the rear space parts of 2 windbraces are
exposed; a tie has been added at low level to the centre
truss. In the rear wall is a late C19 3-light casement window
at eaves level, and the stairwell has a small rectangular
light with iron stanchion.
Part of an outstanding late medieval planned urban group.
