House with shop. c1453, built as part of the "New Works" by
Bishop Bekynton, modified late C18/early and late C19.
Rendered with ashlar lining, all colourwashed, Welsh slate
roof behind parapet, brick chimney stack.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with attic, single wide bay. Ground floor
projects slightly, with late C19 shop front having stone
stallrisers, windows with ornamental column jambs and rounded
top corners, panelled side pilasters with 2 console brackets
to fascia cornice on left only, central glazed door in very
deep opening. Upper floors appear to have lost the bay
windows, instead there is a composite sash window of 4+12+4
panes to first floor and to second floor a 12-pane sash window
in plain opening, cutting through the original medieval string
course. Small hipped roof dormer behind parapet on right,
stack to right on raised coped verge.
INTERIOR: ground floor has 4-compartment ceiling with moulded
beams; the rear wall completely breached, and work beyond
mostly of C19. The first floor has a 2-compartment ceiling
with some original timbers in the front half, and a segmental
arched recess in the E party wall; in the rear wall is a
15-pane sash in a splayed opening. Upper stair is C20, with a
12-pane sash and a later casement to the stairwell, through a
4-centred arched doorway to second floor, with ceiled front
room, and 9-pane sash in the rear wall.
Part of an outstanding late medieval planned urban group.
