Farmhouse. Probably late C18/early C19, incorporating probably
C17 range to rear, with further additions and alterations.
Probably in 3 stages of build. Reddish-brown brick in Flemish
bond with red brick dressings and plain-tile roof. Central
staircase plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attic, 3 bays, that to centre breaks
forward and is pedimented. Central entrance: 6-panel door with
fanlight with radial glazing, doorcase has pilasters and open
dentil pediment. 8/8 sashes throughout with flat arches of
rubbed brick. 3-course first-floor band to outer bays. Flat
and dentilled eaves bands, dentils to pediment. Semi-circular
window with radial glazing bars. Hipped roof, internal and
lateral stacks.
Right return: ground floor has tripartite 6/6 sashes between
2/2 sashes under cambered arches and early small-pane bow
window with glazing bars. First-floor band. First floor has
6/6 and 10/10 sashes under cambered arches.
Rear: pair of tall windows, both under cambered arches, that
to left is blocked, that to right has multi-pane glazing and
continues through 2 floors.
INTERIOR: rear staircase has early C19 stick balusters; front
narrow open-well staircase has short stick balusters. Pull-up
shutters to most rooms; 6 fielded-panel doors.
Regency marble fireplace to front left room. Close studding to
first floor at rear and plank doors. Further range to rear has
massive chamfered beam, huge inglenook fireplace with meat
hooks. Cellar to right.
Rear range believed to have originally been a one-up, one-down
charcoal burner's cottage. Bay window thought to have replaced
cart opening.
HISTORY: it would appear that a small cottage was expanded by
adding a 2-storey timber-framed wing, to which was then added
an L-shaped brick range incorporating farm office at rear
right and present facade to front.
