House and school. c1710 with later alterations and additions.
Brick laid to English bond; hipped old tile roof with brick
internal stack. Georgian style. Double-depth plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys plus attic; 3-window range. Brick plinth
with moulded stone coping; moulded brick plat band and top
wooden cornice; rusticated stone quoins.
Ground floor has window with timber sill to 4-light transomed
casement to left of 2 blocked openings, probably windows;
later canted bay window to right, probably replacing 2 windows
(signs of 2 rubbed brick flat arches), with French window.
First floor has central window with stone sill to 3-light
transomed casement with leaded glazing, 2 blocked windows and
window to each end with timber sill to 12-paned sash; 2 gabled
dormers.
Left return has entrance in C20 porch and 2-storey addition
with, to right, a first-floor window with cross-casement with
iron opening casement; attached late C20 garage wing.
Right return has ashlar plat band; 4 windows to each floor,
all with 12-pane sashes, those to ground floor paired to
either side of space; first floor has narrower windows; one
hipped dormer with 2-light small-paned casement to right of
stack.
Rear has ashlar plat band; stair window with cross-casement
and 2-light casement above; to left 12-pane sash to each
floor; to right a 3-light transomed casement to each floor,
that to first floor small-paned; single-storey gabled wing to
right end, with 6-panel door and 2 windows with 12-pane sashes
to inner return and projecting end stack, once used as a
schoolroom.
INTERIOR: recorded as having C18 dog-leg staircase, large
kitchen fireplace, others altered. Barrel-vaulted ceiling to
schoolroom, flagged floors and brick-vaulted cellars.
HISTORY: believed to have been the home of the village
schoolmaster and that approximately 6 pupils boarded here.
