Old School House
GV II
House, formerly school. Late C17, refronted c1735 with later
alterations. Brick laid to Flemish stretcher bond; steeply
pitched hipped renewed tile roof; brick ridge stack.
Double-depth plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 3-window range. Stone plinth, plat band
over ground floor and top modillioned brick cornice. Central
entrance has doorcase with bracketed open pediment-hood and
plank door. Windows have sills, and pegged small-paned
cross-casements with iron opening casements, but ground floor
has bay window to right with C20 glazing; windows have C20
shutters. Right return has gabled dormer. Rear gabled wing
with C20 alterations.
INTERIOR: believed to have C17 staircase.
HISTORY: a boys' school and master's house was established
here in 1739 by the Revd R Boyce, Rector of Berkswell, and was
moved to new premises in 1863.
