Terrace of 3 houses and attached railings to No.31. c1824-1836
with later additions and alterations. Pinkish-brown brick in
Flemish bond with painted stucco facades to 2 houses to left,
and Welsh slate roof, with cast-iron railings.
EXTERIOR: 2 unequal storeys with basement, 8 first-floor
windows arranged 2:4:2.
First floor: two 6/6 sashes; 1/1, 8/8, 6/6 and 8/8 sashes; 3/6
and 6/6 sashes all with rusticated flat arches with raised
keystones.
Ground floor, entrances: part-glazed, 4-panel door with
overlight with stained glass and glazing bars in pilastered
surround with Gothick frieze and cornice; central entrance a
6-panel door with overlight with glazing bars in Tuscan
pilastered surround with entablature and further side entrance
a 4-panel, part-glazed door; 6-panel, part-glazed door in
pilastered surround.
Windows: canted bay to left has casements; to centre house are
two canted bays rising from basement with 2/2 between 1/1
sashes; to right an 8/8 sash with rusticated arch and raised
keystone. Basement: 3/3 sashes, otherwise concealed. Ridge and
end stacks.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: to left basement steps are stick baluster
railings.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Portland Street was laid out 1823-1824.
