Terraced houses. 1845-1855. Built by Thomas Cubitt on his own
land. Stucco. Roof obscured by parapet.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and attic over half basement. 3 windows
each. Most units conform to the following description.
Elevation treated as full-height and nearly full-width
segmental bay. Up stairs to flat-arched entrance with
overlight set in left-hand arch of bay. To the right of the
entrance are 2 windows. All windows are flat arched with
projecting sills; upper storey windows have architraves.
Ground floor has banded rustication. Floor-to-ceiling windows
open out onto first-floor balcony with cast-iron rails and
brackets; each window topped by entablature, the frieze of
which has 3 floral roundels, and a cornice supported by a pair
of console brackets. Centre window of attic is blocked. Storey
band between second floor and attic. Plain entablature band
with projecting cornice above. The following features vary
from the common type. No.2 has an extra window range to the
left of the bay, in which a flat-arched entrance framed by
Tuscan pilasters and entablature is set; side- and margin
lights to door and overlight. A similar Tuscan aedicule
surrounds the entrance of No.24 which is on the return; range
of windows to either side of the entrance, that near the
corner being blocked; the ground floor has no rustication;
storey bands between the ground and first floors as well as
between the second floor and attic. The centre window of the
attic storey is unblocked in Nos 4 and 18. Sashes of original
2 x 2 design to attics of Nos 2-6, 12-16, and 24; of original
2 x 2 design to second floors of Nos 2-6, 10-16, and 20-24;
and of original 1 x 2 design to first floors of Nos 2, 14-16,
and 22-24. Stacks to party walls.
INTERIOR: not inspected. Railings to stairs and areas.
Nos 2-24 form a group with Nos 1-19 (qv).
