Church. 1910-11 by Sir Charles Nicholson of Grimsby, with HC
Corlette; north aisle of 1935 also by Nicholson. Red brick in
English bond with ashlar windows. Green slate roof.
STYLE: Stripped Gothic style.
PLAN: 5-bay aisled nave with west and south doors; chancel
with 2-bay arcade to north chapel, south chapel and organ
chamber; vestry to south.
EXTERIOR: south aisle has 4 external bays. Round-headed
entrance to far left with raised imposts, internal porch with
plain inner door beneath lintel. Above the outer arch is a
small round-headed niche with raised imposts and sill,
containing a small painted figure sculpture. Round-headed
entrance to far right with painted tympanum. Pair of 3-light
4-centred arched windows with 4-centred arched lights.
Brick-coped parapet with pair of arched openings to downpipes
with decorative rainwater-heads.
West end of nave: enclosed porch flanked by pilaster
buttresses and pair of slit lights; recessed 4-centred arch of
2 orders with double doors and painted tympanum. 5-light nave
window and a vesica light in the gable; 3-light window to the
south aisle. Recessed round-headed door to north aisle,
entered from passage.
North aisle, continuous with the north chapel, has a pair of
pointed 2-light windows with Curvilinear-style tracery, and a
pair of projecting bays for confession boxes. North chapel has
a pair of square-headed 2-light windows with round-headed
lights. Concrete-coped parapet with openings for downpipes.
Chancel south side has a 2-storied gabled section containing
the organ loft, with a round-arched bellcote opening flanked
by twin round-headed blind openings with sills and raised
imposts. Flat-roofed single-storey vestry with round-headed
door, 2 square-headed 3-light south windows and a single-light
east window. East end has a 3-light 4-centred arched east
window to the south chapel, and a 4-light round-headed east
window to the chancel with simple Curvilinear-style tracery.
Below this is a lean-to porch to the crypt or basement with an
arcaded front of 3 narrow round-headed arches containing a
door and pair of shuttered windows; returns have blind
round-headed panels and coped parapets.
INTERIOR: 5-bay south arcade to nave and continuous 7-bay
north arcade to nave and chancel, both with pointed chamfered
arches and square piers with narrow banded capitals. West end
has projecting internal porches and a chamfered
segmental-arched recess with a pedimented carved wooden World
War I memorial. North aisle has a pair of segmental-arched
confession stall recesses. South aisle, east end, has
altarpiece with statue of a priest, and arch to south chapel
(formerly Lady Chapel) containing balcony to organ loft.
Chancel has wide arch to south chapel containing similar
balcony, wood panelling to walls, arched recesses for sedilia
and piscina with 3 round-headed niches above them, formerly
containing painted wooden statues of Saints Cedd, Monica and
Augustine, which now stand in the south aisle and north
chapel. Nave and chancel have painted boarded ceilings with
king-post trusses and shield plaques representing Grimsby's
former churches. Chancel screen and pulpit of grained wood
with traceried panels and frieze. Foundation stone dated 28th
January 1911. 1960s baldacchino with square Corinthian columns
and modillioned cornice; carved pilastered altarpiece. North
chapel has a stone altar with a pedimented wooden reredos,
flanked by arched recesses containing 2 figures of saints
(originally in chancel) below a painted coved wooden hood with
an ornate carved openwork frieze. Stained-glass windows in
north aisle and north chapel by Comper; plain glass elsewhere.
Choir stalls with carved panels; painted pews in nave.
