Mausoleum. c1900, by EW Johnson for the Scarisbrick family of
Scarisbrick Hall. Sandstone ashlar with slate roofs. STYLE:
Neo-Norman.
PLAN: cruciform, with transepts and apsidal east end, the
transepts and apse being lower than the nave.
EXTERIOR: 4 round-headed windows in the north and south walls
of the nave, 2 in the west wall of each transept, and a
further 2 in the apse, under coped gables. Circular windows in
the end wall of each transept.
The west end has a round-headed arched west doorway moulded in
2 orders, with chevron mouldings and scalloped capitals, and
double doors protected by wrought-iron gates with Art Nouveau
motifs; the windows are decorated like the doorway, some with
billet mouldings.
A very ornate corbel table runs along the north and south
walls of the nave and round the apse, each corbel decorated
with an individual carving, some abstract and others
semi-naturalistic.
The 4 gables have carved apex crosses, and the roof has 2
small louvred dormers.
INTERIOR is complete in the same style, with arches to
transepts and chancel, and several wall niches similar to
those of the exterior.
