Stables, now with offices above. c1737. Brick with glazed headers, and hipped slate roof. Rectangular single-depth plan with E stables and cart shed to centre and Wend.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 3:2:3:4-window range. Divided into 4 uneven sections by firebreak parapets, with an eaves cornice, wide central segmental arched openings with boarded double doors, openings have segmental arches, 3 doorways to the left-hand sections, 8/8-pane sashes, some C20 casements; an inserted vehicle entrance 3 bays from the right with 3 flat-headed C20 casements above, and a doorway to the left with 8-pane overlight.
INTERIOR: ground-floor stable has original upper floor with ceiling joists notched over cogged tie beam, later stall division, and with offices above. Group value with the N stables opposite (qv).
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached to the SW corner is a buttress and a length of early C18 coped brick wall which is attached to north end of The Guard House (qv).
HISTORY: used as stabling for the officers and a coach house for the Commissioner. Forms an important element within this notably complete Georgian dockyard.
