Stables. c1737. Brick with glazed headers and hipped slate roof. Rectangular single-depth plan with stables at E end.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 3:2-window range. Divided into 2 sections by firebreak parapets, with an eaves cornice. Flat-headed double doorways, the right-hand one a stable door, to middle and right-hand of left-hand section, a segmental-arched vehicle entrance in the left side of the right-hand section, segmental-arched ground-floor 6/6 pane sashes.
INTERIOR: retains original match board partitions to grooms' rooms above stables, with half-glazed panelled doors and cast-iron grates and range with C18 surrounds; ground-floor stables with later stall divisions, and cart shed, hayloft above. Group value with the S stables (qv) opposite.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: a section of the former perimeter wall connects with the south stables (qv).
HISTORY: the perimeter wall formerly extended to the N to connect with the S Tower House (qv). Used as stabling for the officers and a coach house for the Commissioner. Forms an important element within this notably complete Georgian dockyard.
