Central block of training establishment. 1932. By Sir Giles
Gilbert Scott. Brown brick with stone dressings; low pitched,
hipped tiled roofs to towers, the central one with a timber
and brick eaves cornice; parapets to other parts. Stone capped
high plinth.
PLAN: long, 4-storey block with projecting 2-storey wings at
either end, massive central tower and short end towers.
EXTERIOR: entrance is approached by wide steps with stone
torchieres at outer angles and is flanked by buttresses which
merge into wall above 2nd floor. Wide, moulded stone arch to
recessed double doors flanked by windows and with decorative
pedimental treatment above initials "WB".
Central 3 entrance bays project as part of tower, flanked by
buttresses which merge into wall above 2nd floor, and with 3
square-headed windows on each floor. Similar windows to rest
of block, except on 4th floor, where they are 2-light and
round-headed, with Perpendicular-type tracery. Buttresses
between ground-floor windows, which are slightly set back
under receding astragal mouldings.
Central tower has, at uppermost stage, four 2-light openings
with stone, modified Perpendicular blank tracery above. Below
this 3 very long, round-arched bell openings with pilaster
strips between; and beneath each of these, double round-headed
blank arches tapering down to blank wall below.
Side wings are blank on street front but have 2 windows on
each floor on inner return. Added block on inner corner of
right wing with stairway leading up to mezzanine level
entrance.
