Description

TM 24 NW PLAYFORD CHURCH LANE

4/10 Copyhold
-
- II

House. C15 or early C16. 3-cell cross-passage entrance plan; a converted
open-hall house. 1 storey and attics. Timber-framed and weather-boarded, the
gables plastered with a little herringbone pargetting of C18 or C19. Roman
pantiled roof, half-hipped with internal and end chimneys of red brick. C19
casements, some with small panes. Boarded C19 entrance door with glazed
panel; C20 cantilevered canopy. The open hall was built in 2 equal bays with
a central cambered and arch-braced tie-beam. The upper bay has evidence for
shuttered windows at front and back. Coupled-rafter roof and widely-spaced
studwork. The attic rooms at either end have heavy lodged floor joists; the
staircase at the right-hand end is perhaps original, modified in C17. A large
fireplace was inserted C16 to heat the hall, backing onto the cross-passage.
In C17 an upper floor was inserted into the hall. The service end partition
wall has been entirely removed. The house was subdivided into cottages in
C19.
