House. 1846, for one of the Smyth family, owners of the nearby agricultural
drill works (probably James Smyth). White brick, part colourwashed; slated
roof. 2 storeys and basement. Symmetrical 3-bay entrance front: French
windows, flat arches; 3-centre arched doorway set within an arched recess:
double 3-panel doors, inset with panelled reveals, plain fanlight. At first
floor level is a wide balcony across the whole facade: this is of cast iron
with decorative railings and is supported on cast iron brackets; it is
undoubtedly a product of Smyth's nearby iron foundry. Moulded eaves cornice
and flat parapet. Attached to the right hand side is a small conservatory.
3-bay garden front, with similar cast iron balconies to each of the first
floor windows. Attached to the left hand side is a good mid C19 conservatory
containing a grotto.
