General
GV II*
Parish church. Nave, chancel and octagonal tower C14, aisles and south
chantry chapel are C15. The whole church much restored mid C19. Main fabric
in flint with stone quoins and dressings. Plain tiled roofs with parapets to
the gables of the nave, chancel and north and south aisles. The tower is on
the south side; its south door forms the main entrance porch and has a 2
centred pointed arch with stone voussoirs: the arch springs from 3 engaged
columns with caps. The tower is in 3 stages with thin string courses: the
upper stage has Perpendicular louvered bell openings on all eight sides and is
surmounted by a slender leaded spire in chevron pattern surrounded by a
castellated parapet. The tower has six bells, mostly C17. The windows are a
mixture of Decorated and Perpendicular mostly clear glazed. The interior is
plain and of much C19 restoration almost without exception well executed in
the manner of the C14. The chancel has a simple plastered, barrel vaulted
ceiling with painted decoration. To the left of the C15 south chapel is the
former rood loft entrance. The font is C14; octagonal with tracery panelled
stem and crocketed gables on bowl. In the south wall of the chancel are
sedilia and piscina. Graded II* for external appearance and spire.
