Description

CHESTER CITY (IM)

SJ4066SE EASTGATE STREET AND ROW
595-1/4/155 (North side)
No.17A Street and No.11 Row

GV II

Undercroft and town house redeveloped as street-level shop,
Row shop and accommodation. Medieval, largely replaced c1800
and mid C20. Brick and sandstone; roof concealed.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys of one bay. Modern shopfronts of no
interest; 12 sandstone steps to Row, east; C20 mild steel
railing to Row front; end-piers refaced in C20 brickwork;
modern coverings to sloping stallboard 2.4m from front to rear
and to Row walk; modern small-pane shopfront to Row of no
interest; plastered ceiling to stallboard and Row walk. The
late Georgian front to the third and fourth storeys is faced
with a mid C20 outer leaf in stretcher bond, containing 2
recessed 12-pane horned sashes to each storey with sash-boxes
partly exposed; concrete sills and coping; slightly cambered
brick window-heads.
The party wall between the rear yard of this item and the yard
of the Boot Inn is partly of medieval sandstone masonry,
marking the boundary of the burgage plot, the most interesting
feature of this item.
INTERIOR: Street and Row levels have no visible features of
special interest. The dogleg open-string stair, flights
parallel with front, is c1800 with shaped brackets, turned
newel and stick balusters. The third storey has a cornice and
a blocked fireplace, the fourth storey a C18 strutted truss
with a C17 oak reused tie-beam.
