Site of 2 medieval undercrofts and town houses, now shop and
stair to licensed premises at street level and licensed
premises at Row level. The present visible structure was
rebuilt, probably 1912-13 by RW Boden for Walker and Knight.
Timber frame with plaster panels; shingle roof.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys plus attics; 2 structural bays. The street
level frontage is modern and of no interest; stone steps to
Row at south end; fascia at base of Row stallboard has carved
running pattern of vines; sandstone south pier; north pier
partly of stone; 2 intermediate stanchions clad in timber;
sloping stallboard to front of Row walk; timber handrail on
ornamental mild steel balusters; undistinguished timber-framed
face of licensed premises to the Row. The bressumer carries a
jetty to the third storey on paired consoles at ends and
centre with 8 intermediate brackets; 2 canted 5-light
mullioned and transomed leaded oriels in timber framing with
diagonal braces to lower panels and quadrant braces to the
upper panels. The jettied fourth storey has 2 shallow 4-light
mullioned and transomed canted leaded oriels in timber framing
with recessed central and end panels and braced panels at each
side of each oriel. A shallow coved jetty carries a pair of
front gables, each with a leaded cross-window and herringbone
bracing; plain bargeboards; the roof behind the gables has a
mansard front.
INTERIOR: The floor of the shop is approx 1m below pavement
level, with no accessible cellar beneath. The shop and the
licensed premises have no visible features of special
interest.
